Abstract
Objective: The incidence of stroke is increasing in the elderly. Elderly patients have been excluded from the previous studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) with acute ischemic stroke in elderly patients older than 80 years old.

Methods: 11 patients aged more than 80 with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled in this study. They had undergone MT from January 2010 to December 2015 in our hospital. We investigated the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) at admission, NIHSS after 3 days from MT, NIHSS after 1 month from MT, complications, modified Rankin scale (mRS) and modified Thrombolysis In Cerebral Infarction (mTICI) scores.

Results: There was significant differences in the NIHSS compared to at admission and after 3 days from MT (p=0.008). Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage was occurred in 2 patients and brain edema was occurred in 1 patient.

Conclusion: We could find a significant difference of NIHSS between at admission and after 3 days from MT. There is no reason why MT is limited due to age. Considering the general condition of the patients and a sequela after MT is important and then, MT can be a feasible treatment option to elderly patients older than 80 years old.
